The race to succeed General Romeo Brawner Jr. has entered its final stretch, with the Philippine military expected to welcome a new chief in the coming weeks.

Leading contenders include a veteran admiral, a senior intelligence, and an Air Force veteran who insiders say is backed by a powerful Cabinet secretary, InsiderPH learned.

Brawner, who was appointed chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in July 2023, concludes a rare three-year term that paved the way for long-term reforms and modernization.

Having a strong background managing territorial defense in the West Philippine Sea is expected to play a key role in the selection process.

Defense insiders also noted that continuity with Brawner’s modernization agenda will be important—perhaps just as much as choosing a leader who commands respect across the ranks.

One contender’s critical role mentoring future officers is viewed by some as an advantage.

Whoever succeeds as AFP’s next chief will also have big shoes to fill.

A member of PMA Makatao Class of 1989, Brawner graduated second in his class and has spent more than three decades in military service.

For now, the contenders can only wait as the administration weighs who is best suited to lead the Armed Forces through its next chapter.
