  • LG is taking energy-saving technology deeper into its mass-premium appliance range
  • The strategy positions efficiency as a broader competitive feature rather than a premium extra
  • High electricity costs could make the proposition particularly relevant to Filipino households

LG Electronics is betting that energy efficiency can become a mainstream competitive feature in home appliances, as it moves technologies previously concentrated in flagship products into more accessible segments.

The shift

The South Korean electronics company is expanding its range of high-efficiency washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and dishwashers, which it will showcase at IFA 2026 in Berlin from Sept. 4 to 8.

The strategy reflects an effort to compete not only on appliance performance and features but also on operating costs — an increasingly relevant consideration in markets such as the Philippines, where electricity remains a significant household expense.

Why it matters

Energy efficiency has traditionally helped manufacturers differentiate premium appliances. Moving similar technologies further down the portfolio could broaden their appeal to consumers weighing upfront prices against longer-term electricity consumption.

LG is already applying that approach to its laundry business. A mass-premium dryer scheduled for release later this year has been upgraded from a European B-grade energy rating to the new A-grade standard.

The expansion is part of LG’s wider Energy Leadership strategy to make advanced energy-saving technologies available across more product categories, the company said in a release.

By the numbers

LG said one flagship washing machine exceeds applicable European A-grade efficiency requirements by up to 70 percent, while selected Bottom-Freezer refrigerators surpass their applicable A-grade requirements by up to 35 percent.

Nearly the entire new dishwasher range also achieves the applicable European A-grade rating, with selected models delivering energy savings up to 30 percent above the benchmark through the company’s Hybrid Air Dry technology.

The European Union’s A-to-G energy scale was recalibrated in recent years to make its highest efficiency ratings more demanding, raising the threshold manufacturers must meet to earn an A-grade classification.

The bigger picture

For LG, widening access to efficient appliances could turn energy consumption into a stronger point of competition beyond the premium segment. For consumers, however, the financial payoff will ultimately depend on appliance prices, usage patterns and local electricity rates.

“LG is committed to a dual pursuit: achieving the absolute highest levels of product efficiency and ensuring that our innovations are within the reach of more households,” LG Home Appliance Solution Co. president Baek Seung-tae said.
