DOE, Ayala Land rally public behind energy conservation

Encouraging Filipinos to adopt simple energy-saving habits could help strengthen the country's energy security and reduce pressure on the power grid, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), which is promoting greater public participation in demand-side management efforts.

To support this goal, the DOE and Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) introduced O.N.E., or Oras Natin sa Efficiency, at BGC Park Triangle in Taguig City.

The initiative encourages households, institutions, and businesses to dedicate one hour each week—from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.—to reducing electricity consumption through actions such as switching off non-essential lighting and minimizing power use.

Collective Action

The O.N.E. Campaign forms part of the government's broader strategy to encourage more efficient energy consumption across sectors while fostering long-term behavioral change among consumers.

DOE Secretary Sharon S. Garin said the initiative demonstrates how individual actions can collectively contribute to addressing the country's energy challenges.

“Through O.N.E, we are empowering every Filipino to take part in securing our nation’s energy future. Small actions, when done collectively, can lead to meaningful and lasting impact,” Garin said.

The DOE said the campaign seeks to build a culture of energy mindfulness by encouraging regular participation from households, businesses, and institutions nationwide.

For Ayala Land, the partnership provides an opportunity to expand the campaign's reach through its network of estates, residential communities, commercial centers, offices, hotels, and logistics facilities.

Sustainability Drive

Ayala Land highlighted its ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency across its nationwide portfolio, which consumes about 1 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually.

The company manages energy demand through efficient building design, advanced technologies, renewable energy adoption, and operational improvements.

It has also committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

“Ayala Land has long recognized that energy efficiency is fundamental to sustainable development. Through our partnership with the Department of Energy, we are proud to support the O.N.E Campaign and help drive a culture of responsible energy use across communities,” said Ayala Land chief sustainability officer Robert S. Lao in a statement.

“Our commitment goes beyond compliance—we are systematically transforming how our estates, buildings, and operations consume energy, as part of our broader sustainability goals,” he added.

Currently, 98 percent of Ayala Land's commercial properties are powered by renewable energy or supported by renewable energy certificates, while 156 EV charging stations operate across 64 properties.

Energy Management

Ayala Land continues to expand energy efficiency initiatives through ISO 50001-certified energy management systems, smart building technologies, and solar power projects.

The company has installed 15.3 megawatts of solar capacity across 13 Ayala Malls properties and plans to increase this to 38.4 megawatts by 2027.
