Insider Spotlight
Chinese automaker BYD's premium brand DENZA is betting that ultra-fast charging and advanced vehicle control systems can help redefine expectations in the electric supercar category.
Why it matters
DENZA unveiled the all-electric Z at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, introducing its first supercar as the BYD Group expands its presence in the premium performance vehicle market. The model is offered in Coupe, Spider and Racing variants, alongside a Special Edition intended for Nürburgring Nordschleife record attempts.
According to a company release, the vehicle is powered by a triple-motor system producing up to 1,604PS, while the Racing version accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in as little as 1.96 seconds
The big picture
The DENZA Z is built on the company's e3 Sports Car Platform, which integrates a triple-motor powertrain, Cell-to-Body battery architecture, DiSus-M magnetorheological suspension and second-generation Blade Battery technology.
The release said the platform also enables FLASH Charging, allowing the battery to recharge from 10 percent to 97 percent in about nine minutes under compatible conditions, addressing one of the key pain points for performance EV owners.
By the numbers
BYD executive vice president Stella Li said, “The DENZA Z is born to perform and built to win. It redefines performance with its power, acceleration and dynamic ability – and FLASH Charging means it's the only electric supercar without compromise on how these strengths can be used. Z is a great example of how DENZA's technology-led approach is going to set new benchmarks in every segment it enters. It really is the supercar for the new-energy generation!”
What's next
DENZA said customer orders for the Coupe, Spider and Racing versions will begin this summer in selected markets, with initial deliveries expected before year-end, while the Z Special Edition continues development ahead of Nürburgring testing. —Princess Daisy C. Ominga | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
