CAAP: SMC’s NAIA general aviation transfer plan to Lipa requires study

Philippine aviation authorities have asked San Miguel Corp.-backed New NAIA Infra Corp. for a complete study on its proposal to relocate general aviation facilities to an airfield in Lipa, Batangas amid plans  to  ease congestion and add capacity at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) remain open to solutions to decongest NAIA and are waiting for a formal proposal, according to CAAP.

The DOTr had also asked NNIC to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the transfer will be viable and convenient.

NNIC had previously asked the government to look into the relocation of general aviation to an area in Lipa.

“Just an idea,” NNIC president Ramon S. Ang had told InsiderPH in a text message.

Lipa was identified as an possible location due to its easy access to the South Luzon Expressway and STAR Tollway, both of which are controlled by SMC.

According to CAAP, it remains unclear which air facility would be used, as there is an existing facility known as Fernando Air Base in Lipa.

“If it is the airbase, there are no air navigation equipment available there as there are currently no civilian flights using the airstrip,” a CAAP official explained.

“We need to study any proposal that will be submitted,” the official added. “So far, these are just talks.”
