That shift is reflected in Rizal Commercial Banking Corp.'s (RCBC) latest recognition as Euromoney's Best Bank for Digital for the seventh consecutive year, extending what the bank said is the longest winning streak of its kind among Philippine banks and making it the first bank in Asia to reach the milestone.
The recognition underscores a broader industry transition toward digital ecosystems that support customers across different stages of their financial journey instead of offering standalone digital services, based on a company release.
Why it matters
As digital banking adoption matures, banks are competing on accessibility, financial inclusion, and customer outcomes instead of simply launching new technologies.
Reggie Cariaso, president and chief executive officer of RCBC, said the bank's digital transformation has focused on helping customers build stronger financial futures.
"Technology should never become the destination. It is simply the bridge. The real measure of innovation is whether it helps people build better financial lives and achieve greater financial security," said Cariaso.
RCBC said its strategy centers on three interconnected platforms designed to address different customer needs.
ATM Go expands banking access by turning neighborhood merchants into banking touchpoints, allowing customers in rural and underserved communities to perform essential transactions closer to home. The platform now operates across all 82 Philippine provinces, according to the bank.
DiskarTech, meanwhile, supports financial inclusion through the MySSS Card powered by RCBC DiskarTech, developed with the Social Security System. The solution combines government identification, savings, digital payments, and banking services in a single card, helping introduce more Filipinos to formal banking.
For freelancers, digital professionals, and overseas earners, RCBC Pulz introduced what the bank described as the Philippines' first U.S. Virtual Account for customers without a U.S. address, enabling users to receive payments from international clients while keeping their finances connected to the Philippine banking system.
The bigger picture
The Philippine digital finance sector is entering a new growth phase, with banks expanding beyond customer onboarding toward services that support payments, credit, investments, cross-border banking, and wealth creation.
Lito Villanueva, executive vice president and chief innovation and inclusion officer of RCBC, said the bank has remained focused on building an ecosystem that evolves with customers' ambitions.
"When we began our digital transformation years ago, we weren't simply building better banking applications," said Villanueva.
"We were building a banking ecosystem that grows with people's ambitions. As economies become more connected, our responsibility as a bank is to help Filipinos participate confidently, not only within the Philippines, but anywhere opportunities exist."
For RCBC, digital leadership is increasingly defined not by the technology it builds, but by how effectively it empowers people to participate in the evolving digital economy. — Princess Daisy C. Ominga| Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
