Metro Pacific clears PCC review for Franklin Baker takeover

Metro Pacific is expanding deeper into the agri-food value chain through its subsidiary Metro Pacific Agro Ventures Inc. (MPAV), which is acquiring full ownership of coconut products maker Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines.

The Philippine Competition Commission approved the deal on October 23 after a Phase 2 review.

MPAV’s move strengthens its push into coconut-based products, adding Franklin Baker’s export-focused portfolio of desiccated coconut, coconut water, coconut cream, and coconut milk.

Franklin Baker operates production facilities in Laguna and Davao del Sur, giving Metro Pacific, backed by tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, a wider domestic footprint.

Regulators initially flagged possible risks in raw coconut sourcing in Mindanao.

These concerns were eased after further data analysis and field checks showed farmers still have multiple buyers.

The PCC found no substantial lessening of competition in both domestic and global markets.
