Grab rolls out Philippines’ first fully electric, on-demand taxi fleet

In a major stride toward sustainable urban transport, Grab Philippines has unveiled GrabTaxi Electric—the country’s first fully electric, on-demand taxi fleet officially recognized by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Launched in partnership with local operator EV Taxi Corp, the pioneering service is now available in several high-traffic areas across Metro Manila, including Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Parañaque, and Pasay.

The launch follows Grab’s successful June 2024 pilot run with BYD Philippines, which validated the commercial viability of electric vehicles (EVs) for both fleet operators and driver-partners. The pilot proved that EV adoption is not only environmentally essential but also financially feasible and scalable.

“This is not just about offering another ride option,” said Grab Philippines country head Ronald Roda. “It’s about fundamentally changing the DNA of urban transport in the Philippines—making sustainability something you can book, ride, and experience today.”

GrabTaxi Electric is part of Grab’s larger eco-mobility strategy, with plans to scale EV operations to other cities like Davao and Cagayan De Oro by year-end. To support this expansion, Grab is integrating in-app features that encourage user contributions to environmental causes and strengthen its collaboration with both government and private stakeholders to build a nationwide EV ecosystem.

EV Taxi Corp president Frankie Ang emphasized the value of local-global partnerships in driving change. “Our partnership with Grab proves that when multinational platforms and local innovators work together, we can fast-track a cleaner, more inclusive future for transport.”

Commuter groups have expressed strong support. “Zero-emission transport is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity,” said Ira Panganiban of the Coalition of Filipino Commuters. “GrabTaxi Electric shows that green mobility can be part of everyday life.”

Currently in beta, GrabTaxi Electric allows passengers to book electric taxis via the Grab app’s Transport tab. Passenger and driver feedback during this period will help refine the fleet's future scale and service features. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
