Conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC) is moving forward with detailed design plans for its ambitious P740-billion aerotropolis in Bulacan after the Department of Transportation approved its sprawling master plan.

Led by tycoon Ramon S. Ang, SMC is accelerating land development works, backed by fresh funds from a P120-billion loan program.

In its 2024 annual report, SMC said DOTr gave the green light for the master plan.

“[W]e have now moved to the detailed engineering design phase,” the conglomerate said.

Big picture

SMC said the Bulacan International Airport, also known as the New Manila International Airport (MIA), will be finished by 2028.

It will initially serve 35 million passengers, going up to 100 million in succeeding phases until fully complete.

“Once complete, this airport is seen to create over a million direct and indirect jobs nationwide through the many industries it will support and help develop—including tourism, aviation, logistics, and manufacturing, among others,” SMC said in the report.

Infra giant

The conglomerate, via New NAIA Infra Corp., also operates the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the country’s busiest gateway.

“Our participation, together with other partners, in New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), which won the concession to rehabilitate and operate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), enables us to support the expansion and modernization of the 77-year-old gateway,” SMC said.

Apart from this, SMC operates Boracay Airport, the main gateway to Boracay Island; runs one of the largest toll road networks in the country; and is building the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 to Bulacan.”

“We recognize the critical role played by infrastructure and air transport in enabling tourism, trade, and economic development,” the company said.
