The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) officially turned over the management of BPIA to AIC on June 16, 2025.
Dubbed the country’s “Green Gateway to the World,” BPIA becomes a key part of AIC’s strategy to modernize regional gateways and boost connectivity across the archipelago.
“We are excited to officially begin operations at BPIA and bring our brand of operational excellence, innovation, and passenger-focused service to this important gateway,” said AIC president and CEO Cosette Canilao in a statement. “This project is about enabling tourism, empowering local economies, and creating inclusive growth across the Visayas.”
AIC plans to invest ₱4.53 billion over the coming years to expand and upgrade the airport’s facilities under a public-private partnership. Initial work will increase the terminal’s annual capacity from two million to 2.5 million passengers within two years, with long-term plans to handle up to 3.9 million passengers annually by 2030.
Planned developments include the expansion of the passenger terminal, modernization of airside and landside infrastructure, and the installation of advanced airport systems and equipment.
“The official handover marks the beginning of a new chapter for BPIA. We are committed to transforming it into a globally competitive gateway that reflects Bohol’s beauty and potential,” said Rafael M. Aboitiz, AIC vice president and head of the airports business.
BPIA now joins Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) and Laguindingan International Airport (LIA) in AIC’s portfolio.
MCIA is the Philippines’ second-busiest airport and carries a 4-star Skytrax rating, while LIA ranks sixth in national traffic and has been under AIC’s management since April 2025. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
