A Philippine healthtech platform is using mobile technology, drones and portable clinics to deliver medical care to remote islands and underserved communities, highlighting how digital tools are reshaping healthcare access across an archipelago where reaching a doctor can still take hours of travel.

Why it matters

In a country of more than 7,600 islands, healthcare access remains uneven. Telemedicine platforms and portable digital clinics are increasingly being used to close that gap, particularly in geographically isolated and disaster-prone areas.

The effort is drawing global attention. Metro Pacific Health Tech’s mWell recently won the Global Mobile (GLOMO) Award for Best Mobile Innovation Supporting Emergency or Humanitarian Situations under the Tech4Good category.

The award was announced at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona on March 4, making mWell the first Philippine healthtech app to win in that category.

The recognition marks mWell’s second GLOMO win, following its 2023 award for Best Mobile Innovation for Digital Life.

“Digital innovation is key to our commitment to national progress,” Manuel V. Pangilinan, chair of mWell and MPIC, said in a statement.

“Through mWell, we continue to harness technology to bring quality healthcare closer to every Filipino.”

“This recognition affirms our focus on advancing healthcare inclusion through innovation,” said Chaye Cabal-Revilla, president and CEO of mWell and chief finance, risk, and sustainability officer of MPIC.

“Our goal is simple: ensure healthcare is within reach for communities that need it most.”

The platform’s ecosystem — together with KonsultaMD — now serves 7.3 million users, with 37 percent coming from vulnerable and underserved sectors, according to the company.

To extend care beyond urban centers, the initiative deploys portable “Clinic-in-a-Bag” kits that enable telemedicine consultations in areas with limited healthcare infrastructure.

So far, 179 mWell OnTheGo units have been distributed across remote islands, Indigenous areas, correctional facilities and disaster-affected communities, supporting nearly 891,000 people across 17 Indigenous communities.

Each portable clinic includes a smartphone or tablet preloaded with the mWell app, Wi-Fi or satellite internet connectivity, a solar panel and a power station. With the system, patients can consult licensed doctors remotely, obtain prescriptions and access health records without leaving their communities.

The big picture

Telemedicine adoption accelerated during the pandemic, but in the Philippines it is increasingly being integrated into broader digital health ecosystems that combine consultations, diagnostics, pharmacy services and health records.

mWell is positioning itself as one such integrated platform, linking digital consultations with healthcare services and wellness programs.

The platform also supports BangKalusugan (BangkaHealth) in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), deploying health boats that bring telemedicine services to coastal villages and island barangays.

In emergencies, the company launched Southeast Asia’s first medicine drone delivery service, designed to deliver life-saving medicines to patients in minutes instead of hours.

By the numbers

  • 7.3 million users served through mWell and KonsultaMD
  • 37 percent of users from vulnerable or underserved sectors
  • 179 portable OnTheGo clinics deployed nationwide
  • 891,000 people supported across 17 Indigenous communities

Global recognition

The GLOMO Awards, organized by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), are widely regarded as among the mobile industry’s most prestigious honors.

The awards recognize innovations that advance connectivity and generate social impact.

This year’s winners were selected by a panel of more than 250 independent experts from across the global mobile ecosystem.

With the win, mWell joins major global technology and telecom brands including Apple, Samsung, Huawei, China Mobile and China Telecom among the 2026 GLOMO awardees.

Lara Dewar, CMO of the GSMA, said: “Over three decades in and the GLOMOs continue to set the benchmark for what true excellence looks like in our industry.”

Dewar said the standard from this year’s winners was extra ordinary, with every winner representing innovation and excellence with real purpose and global ambition.

What’s next

The platform is also expanding services for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) through partnerships with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

Through the collaboration, Filipino workers abroad — including those in the Middle East — can access digital consultations with Filipino doctors and mental health coaches who speak their language.

Meanwhile, the company is working with hospitals and clinics transitioning from PhilHealth’s eKonsulta platform, which will be decommissioned on July 1, 2026.

As a PhilHealth-certified Clinic Management System, the mWell YAKAP Claims Platform is designed to help healthcare providers manage consultations and claims while ensuring continued access to healthcare benefits, particularly for indigent patients.

Looking ahead, mWell is collaborating with the DICT on broader digital health initiatives, including integration with the eGov PH App, where users can access teleconsult services and the mWell HealthID within a unified government platform. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
