Insider Spotlight

  • SM Supermalls marks its 40th anniversary with a major sustainability push.
  • SM City Fairview now hosts the largest rooftop solar PV system on a commercial building in the Philippines.
  • This initiative significantly contributes to SM Prime Holding's Net Zero 2040 goal.
  • The system has a 3.785-megawatt peak (MWp) capacity, offsetting 4,133 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

SM Supermalls has debuted the country’s largest rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at SM City Fairview, a move reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and corporate resilience. The unveiling coincided with the company's 40th anniversary and is a significant step towards SM Prime Holding’s Net Zero 2040 goal.

Driving the news:

The new solar PV system boasts a 3.785-megawatt peak (MWp) capacity, featuring 6,882 solar modules across 4.3 hectares. It is projected to produce up to 5,960-megawatt-hour (MWh) annually, covering 11 percent of the mall’s energy consumption.

  • This energy output is equivalent to powering all of SM City Fairview’s 44 escalators and its mall and perimeter lights for up to two and a half years.
  • The system is expected to prevent the release of 4,133 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.

By the numbers:

SM Prime’s total rooftop solar capacity now stands at 73-MWp, with plans to reach 100-MWp by the end of the year. This project was developed in partnership with Buskowitz Energy.

Flashback:

SM North EDSA installed the first Philippine mall rooftop solar PV system in 2014, with a 1.5-MW peak capacity. The SM City Fairview installation surpasses the previous largest system at SM City Santa Rosa, which had a 3.088-MW peak capacity.

What they're saying:

The project highlighted the leadership of Hans T. Sy, SM Prime executive committee chair, who has spearheaded the property giant’s sustainability programs for over two decades.

The big picture:

SM Supermalls, with 88 malls in the Philippines, aims to integrate green design, energy efficiency, disaster resilience, and environmental stewardship into its operations, creating inclusive spaces that support climate action.
