This initiative aligns with WalterMart's goal to source 20 percent of its electricity needs from solar energy by 2025.
The new solar installations, totaling 11.4 MWp, form part of WalterMart’s multi-phase program to integrate clean energy into its operations.
Officials from WM Shopping Center Management Inc. (WMSCMI), the developer of the WalterMart chain of malls, and their counterparts from First Gen and sister company Pi Energy Inc. announced their deepening partnership after the completion recently of seven solar or photovoltaic (PV) power systems in WalterMart malls in new Central Luzon and Southern Luzon locations.
Malls in Candelaria (Quezon), Subic (Zambales), San Fernando (Pampanga), Gapan (Nueva Ecija), Nasugbu (Batangas), Malolos (Bulacan), and Antipolo (Rizal) will soon benefit from renewable energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering their carbon footprint.
In a statement, WalterMart chair Abraham Uy emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainable development, stating, “One of the things we’re really proud of is joining the bandwagon of sustainability, creating a future for our next generation, and not using unnecessary fossil fuel that ultimately damages the environment and the ground.”
The collaboration between WalterMart, First Gen, and Pi Energy began in 2019 with a carpark solar project at WalterMart’s Nasugbu location.
WMSCM has 41 community malls around the Philippines with a total solar capacity of 12.3 MWp. By the end of the year, 25 of these malls will have solar power systems with 27-MWp capacity.
Pi Energy AVP for solar Mark Malabanan praised the expanding partnership, noting, “In a span of five years, our partnership has grown in terms of scale and investment, and that shows the level of commitment of WalterMart to integrate renewable energy into its operations."
"We have on-going installations in additional WalterMart malls that we hope to energize by the end of the year,” Malabanan added.
