As if the country’s healthcare sector didn’t have enough challenges, here’s another one: a severe shortage of pharmacists. The Philippines lacks 27,500 registered pharmacists, making it harder for many Filipinos to access essential medicines.

To address this, the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) Healthcare Sector is pushing reforms to expand pharmacy access, strengthen PhilHealth, and accelerate hospital development.

At the 8th PSAC Healthcare Sector Meeting in Malacañang on March 6, 2025, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. backed these initiatives, emphasizing the private sector’s role in fixing healthcare gaps.

“We are working towards a more equitable and sustainable healthcare system,” said Paolo Borromeo, PSAC healthcare sector lead and AC Health CEO.

“Collaboration between the government and private sector is key to ensuring that every Filipino, regardless of financial standing, has access to quality healthcare,” he added.

To address existing gaps, PSAC proposes telepharmacy services, allowing registered pharmacists to remotely oversee multiple locations while expanding the role of pharmacy assistants.

This approach would increase medicine availability, especially in underserved regions, supporting broader healthcare efforts to reduce treatment delays and improve overall patient care.

PSAC is pushing for hospital licensing reforms to streamline expansion and improve resource distribution, while also working to expand PhilHealth benefits, upgrade IT systems, and enhance financial transparency.
