The certification, conferred last Nov. 6, 2024, makes it the first existing government building to achieve this distinction for operational improvements, the central bank said in a statement.
The BERDE rating system evaluates the environmental performance of buildings, with the four-star recognition signifying “country leader” status.
This places the BSP’s sprawling complex along Roxas Boulevard among the top-tier green-certified facilities in the Philippines, highlighting its commitment to ecological responsibility despite its 20th-century origins.
“This recognition is a testament to our belief in the importance of sustainability. It is proof that we walk the talk,” said BSP Governor Eli Remolona, Jr.
He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the bank’s Sustainable Central Banking Framework, which integrates green practices into its operations.
PhilGBC chair Raymond Rufino underlined the significance of credible certifications for promoting sustainability.
PhilGBC CEO Christopher de la Cruz praised the BSP’s efforts in transforming a decades-old structure into a model of eco-friendly operations, expressing optimism that other existing buildings will follow suit.
The BSP headquarters’ sustainability milestones include a five-star rating from the Department of Energy in 2022 after a spot energy audit. In 2016, it was one of the 10 recipients of the DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation in Government Buildings award.
By incorporating green building principles, the BSP said it aims to foster resilience against natural hazards while demonstrating leadership in environmental stewardship, reinforcing its mission to promote sustainability across sectors.
