Under its “Mark the 39 Percent” Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Management Program, Maynilad reduced system losses to 38.4 percent in 2024, from 43 percent the year before.
The company completed 57,562 leak repairs, aided by AI-assisted monitoring tools and acoustic sensors that enabled early detection and predictive maintenance. It also intensified enforcement to curb commercial losses.
These initiatives helped recover millions of liters of treated water daily, contributing to a more efficient and climate-resilient supply system.
Greening watersheds
At the same time, Maynilad expanded its Plant for Life reforestation initiative, which rehabilitates upland watersheds and coastal areas critical to Metro Manila’s raw water supply.
Since 2007, the program has planted over 1.4 million trees and mangroves across nearly 1,968 hectares. It also supports local communities, including the Dumagat indigenous group in the Ipo watershed, through sustainable livelihood components such as nursery work and site maintenance.
ESG recognition
“Our progress in cutting water losses and planting over a million trees proves how ESG principles translate into real benefits for customers and communities,” said Maynilad chief sustainability officer Atty. Roel S. Espiritu.
Maynilad’s initiatives were recognized at the Inquirer ESG EDGE Impact Awards 2025. Its NRW program won a Gold award in the Environmental category, while Plant for Life received a Silver award for Sustainable Ecosystems and Biodiversity Conservation. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
