From Earth Hour to everyday life: Robinsons Malls drives green push

As climate challenges continue to impact communities worldwide, Robinsons Malls is strengthening its commitment to sustainability by embedding environmentally responsible practices into everyday mall experiences.

Aligned with Robinsons Land Corp.'s (RLC) vision of building better lives, these efforts go beyond infrastructure, creating spaces that support both people and the planet.’

Global action

A key highlight of this commitment is Robinsons Malls’ continued support of Earth Hour, the global movement initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007.

On March 28, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Robinsons Malls nationwide will once again join millions around the world in switching off non-essential lights for one hour—symbolizing collective action against climate change.

Beyond this annual event, the company encourages tenants, partners, and surrounding communities to participate, reinforcing the importance of shared responsibility in addressing environmental challenges.

Clean energy

Robinsons Malls’ sustainability efforts extend year-round through strategic partnerships and operational initiatives.

Among its most notable milestones is its collaboration with First Gen, enabling the use of renewable geothermal energy to power key malls across the Visayas and Mindanao.

This partnership supplies over 22 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to Robinsons Malls in Cebu, Antique, Roxas, Tacloban, Pagadian, and Ormoc, as well as select properties under RL Commercial REIT and Robinsons Supermarket Corp.

Sourced from geothermal facilities in Leyte and North Cotabato, the initiative supports the Gokongwei Group’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.

Complementing this are on-ground sustainability features such as solar panel installations, water recycling systems, solid waste management programs, and energy-efficient designs.

These include LED lighting systems, optimized HVAC operations, and architectural designs that maximize natural daylight.

Green mobility

Robinsons Malls is also supporting the shift to cleaner transportation by expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network.

Through partnerships with ACMobility, Meralco, Shell Recharge, and Tesla, the mall operator is making EV charging more accessible nationwide.

From March 27 to 29, 2026, ACMobility will roll out a free public charging initiative across select Robinsons Malls locations, including Ilocos Norte, La Union, Tuguegarao, Iloilo, Roxas, Dumaguete, Antique, Iligan, and Pagadian.

Timed ahead of the Holy Week travel surge, the initiative aims to support motorists while encouraging EV adoption.

The company has also partnered with transport groups and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to improve commuter accessibility.

Initiatives such as point-to-point buses and the reintroduction of the iconic Love Bus aim to reduce reliance on private vehicles and fossil fuels.

Everyday habits

To make sustainability more accessible to shoppers, Robinsons Malls is launching “The Bag Habit” promo in partnership with the Philippine Retailers Association starting March 28.

Customers who bring reusable bags and present at least P1,500 worth of receipts can receive a P50 Movieworld voucher in select malls.

Recycling initiatives are also being expanded through Renew-a-Bottle machines, where shoppers can exchange PET bottles for rewards. Additionally, e-waste collection points in several malls nationwide provide safe disposal options for old electronics.

Through these initiatives, Robinsons Malls continues to foster a culture where sustainability becomes part of everyday life—encouraging Filipinos to take small but meaningful steps toward a greener future. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
