The big picture
East Zone concessionaire Manila Water is strengthening its sustainability push through Lakbayan, a flagship advocacy program that brings communities inside the company’s water and wastewater facilities to better understand how every drop is sourced, treated, and protected.
The initiative is designed to raise awareness on water conservation and promote responsible consumption among students, government agencies, private organizations, and other stakeholders.
What’s happening
Lakbayan offers guided educational tours that walk participants through the entire water cycle—from raw water sources and treatment plants to distribution systems and wastewater facilities.
By showcasing Manila Water’s infrastructure and processes, the program highlights the complexity behind providing safe, clean, and reliable water, as well as the importance of treating wastewater before it is returned to the environment.

Who joined
Participants came from a wide range of public and private institutions, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, DILG–National Capital Region, Bureau of Fire Protection, City Government of Makati, Sangguniang Kabataan of Quezon City, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office of Pateros.
Educational institutions such as San Agustin Seminary, University of the Philippines, Technological University of the Philippines, Mariano Marcos State University, and Western Mindanao State University also took part, alongside other schools and private businesses.
What they’re saying
“Water is a finite resource and its responsible use is a shared obligation, yet it is often overlooked,” said Jeric Sevilla, Manila Water corporate communication affairs group director.
“Lakbayan allows us to share the science, innovation, and dedication behind every drop. Our goal is to inspire individuals and organizations to take meaningful action—whether through simple daily habits or large-scale programs—to conserve water and protect the environment,” he added.
The bottom line
By opening its facilities and sharing its expertise, Manila Water is positioning Lakbayan as more than an educational tour. The program reinforces the company’s broader advocacy for water conservation, empowering participants to become sustainability champions within their own communities. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
