The P5.8-billion project will connect the Poblacion Water Treatment Plant in Muntinlupa more extensively to Maynilad's distribution network, allowing the utility to deliver more water from its southern facilities to areas with increasing demand.
Better supply
Once fully commissioned, the new pipelines will improve water distribution across the southern portion of the West Zone, enhance water pressure management, and increase supply reliability by giving Maynilad greater flexibility to route water from available sources whenever needed.
The infrastructure project forms part of Maynilad's broader efforts to strengthen the resilience of its water system as climate conditions become more unpredictable.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), El Niño conditions are already present in the tropical Pacific and are expected to intensify in the coming months, raising the risk of below-normal rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and drought in parts of the country.
Climate ready
"Investments such as this are part of our continuing effort to build a more resilient water system for the West Zone. As climate conditions become more challenging, we need infrastructure that allows us to maximize available supply, manage constraints more effectively, and better support our customers during periods of tighter raw water availability," said Maynilad chief operating officer Christopher Jaime T. Lichauco in a statement.
The new pipelines complement Maynilad's broader water security program, which includes tapping supplemental water sources such as Laguna Lake, developing modular treatment plants and potable water reuse facilities, expanding storage capacity, reducing water losses, and improving network and pressure management.
Together, these initiatives are intended to reduce the company's reliance on a single water source, improve system flexibility, and ensure reliable water service during prolonged dry conditions.
Maynilad is the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System's concessionaire for the West Zone, serving the largest population within a single water concession area in the country, covering parts of Metro Manila and Cavite. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
