Four relocation projects are underway around the subway's Shaw, East Avenue, Anonas and Ortigas stations, with three targeted for completion by the end of September or October, Manila Water said in a company statement.
The works involve moving pipelines, sewer lines and meter assemblies that intersect with the alignment of the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) Metro Manila Subway Project.
Clearing Shaw
At the intersection of Meralco Avenue and Shaw Boulevard in Pasig City, Manila Water is permanently relocating a 600-millimeter-diameter pipeline affected by the construction of the Shaw station.
The project involves installing a new 600-mm steel pipeline to accommodate subway works. It was 67 percent complete as of the first week of August.
Manila Water said relocating utilities is necessary to prevent existing infrastructure from obstructing subway construction while protecting the reliability of its water distribution system.
The company provides water and wastewater services to Metro Manila's East Zone, which covers areas along parts of the subway alignment.
Quezon City works
In Quezon City, Manila Water is moving sewer and water facilities along V. Luna Road in Barangay Pinyahan for the East Avenue station.
Work includes pipe laying, installation of manholes and valve boxes, transfer of service connections and modifications to the water network.
The project is targeted for completion in October 2026.
Another sewer relocation is underway around the Anonas station, covering portions of A. Luna Street corner F. Castillo Street and J. Bugallon Street up to E. Evangelista Street in Barangay Bagumbayan.
The project is intended to remove sewer infrastructure from areas affected by subway construction and is scheduled for completion by the end of September.
Ortigas relocation
In Pasig, Manila Water is also relocating two meter set assemblies along Ortigas Avenue corner Meralco Avenue that are affected by the Ortigas station alignment.
The work is targeted for completion by the end of October.
"These infrastructure adjustments are essential not only to accommodate a major national transport project but also to ensure that our customers continue to receive reliable water and wastewater services throughout the construction period," Manila Water corporate communications group head Dittie Galang said in the statement.
The company said it is coordinating with the DOTr, contractors and other stakeholders to minimize disruptions as the relocation projects proceed.
The utility works form part of preparations for the Metro Manila Subway, a flagship government transportation project designed to improve connectivity and ease road congestion in the capital.
The underground railway will have 17 stations stretching from Valenzuela City to Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.
Manila Water said clearing affected utilities would reduce construction constraints and help keep subway works moving while protecting its water distribution and wastewater collection systems. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
