The country's first hosting of surfing's premier circuit at Cloud 9 will test more than its sporting facilities, placing infrastructure reliability, transport connectivity and government coordination in the spotlight.
Synchronized operations
Delivering a competition of this scale requires synchronized operations across aviation, ports, roads, electricity and local government services.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is working alongside the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Transportation, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, Philippine Ports Authority and National Electrification Administration, among other agencies.
Philippine Airlines, Pagcor and tourism-related government bodies are also supporting preparations.
The coordination reflects a broader government initiative to develop the Philippines' capacity to accommodate international competitions.
National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee
Administrative Order No. 38 established the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee (NST-IAC) to align government efforts in attracting investments, generating employment and supporting local economies.
PSC and NST-IAC Chair Patrick Gregorio sees major sporting competitions as platforms for economic development and international visibility.
“Sports tourism is more than staging competitions. It is a powerful platform that showcases destinations, drives local economies, inspires communities, and places the Philippines on the global map,’’ Gregorio said in a press statement.
On the ground
Surigao del Norte Gov. Lyndon Barbers, General Luna Mayor Johnson Sajulga and Vice Mayor Doc Minmin Sajulga are spearheading local preparations.
The international field includes Brazil's Yago Dora, Gabriel Medina and Italo Ferreira, Japan's Kanoa Igarashi and Australia's Molly Picklum.
Filipino surfers John Mark “Marama” Tokong, Jayuard Alciso and Mara Lopez will compete against international talent.
Beyond the competition, Siargao's hosting responsibilities offer a practical measure of how effectively national and local agencies can coordinate complex international operations.
“This will be a historic moment for Philippine surfing, and the arrival of the Championship Tour will usher the sport into an exciting new era,” Gregorio said. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
