Manila subway project enters BGC with Uptown Bonifacio groundbreaking

Construction of the Metro Manila Subway has reached Bonifacio Global City, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. leading the groundbreaking of the Kalayaan Avenue station inside Megaworld Corp.’s Uptown Bonifacio township.

The Kalayaan Avenue Station will rise along 11th Avenue beside the JPMorgan Chase Center and the Uptown Eastgate office tower and connect directly to Uptown Parade and Uptown Mall.

The 33-kilometer subway is designed to cut travel time from Quezon City to Ninoy Aquino International Airport to about 35 minutes, with three stations planned within BGC.

The subway project, started during the Duterte administration, is expected to be fully completed by 2032.

Right-of-way secured

“Today we prove to the world something we once thought would be impossible: a subway in Metro Manila,” said President Marcos Jr.

“This project is part of a broader effort to improve our public transport system. I wish to recognize the BCDA (Bases Conversion and Development Authority) and Megaworld Corporation for granting the DOTR a perpetual easement of right of way for the construction of these stations. Thank you for your help and assistance because this means that this project begins constructions with 100% of the required right of way already secured,” he added.

Megaworld granted the Department of Transportation a perpetual right-of-way easement for the station site, allowing the project to start with all required land secured.

Township connectivity impact

“This groundbreaking for the Metro Manila Subway Project brings us closer to the vision we conceptualized for Uptown Bonifacio more than a decade ago,” said Megaworld president Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso.

“Soon, people can move between our township and the rest of Metro Manila with ease, without having to rely on their cars to go from one point to another. We thank the President for allowing us to be part of this historic milestone for the Philippines,” she added.

The Kalayaan Avenue stop is one of three planned BGC stations, alongside McKinley Parkway and Lawton Avenue.

Combined, the three stations are expected to serve more than 200,000 passengers daily in their first year of operations.
