Iconic newspaper Philippine Daily Inquirer merges print, digital operations in biggest shift in nearly 40-year history

The Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) is merging its print and digital operations, with Inquirer Interactive Inc., publisher of Inquirer.net, set to take over newspaper publication starting July 1, 2025.

PDI is merging its print and digital operations, with Inquirer Interactive Inc., publisher of Inquirer.net, set to take over newspaper publication starting July 1, 2025, the publication said in a statement on Friday.

Founded in December 1985 during the final months of the Marcos dictatorship, PDI played a pivotal role in covering the events leading to the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, cementing its place as a key force in the restoration of Philippine democracy.

This marks the most significant transformation in the nearly 40-year history of one of the country’s most trusted legacy news brands.

The board said the integration is the best strategy to adapt to changing reader habits while preserving the Inquirer’s legacy.

Inquirer.net currently receives 27 million monthly page views, and the brand aims to combine that reach with its existing print subscriber base.

“To support this transformation, several members of PDI’s editorial team have been invited by Inquirer Interactive to join it in managing its multimedia platform,” the publication said in a statement.

“They have expressed their commitment to maintain uninterrupted newsroom operations, uphold the INQUIRER’s editorial standards, and drive the success of the integration,” it added.

Moreover, the board committed that all affected employees “shall receive the severance or separation benefits that may be due them under the law or the collective bargaining agreement with the PDI Employees Union, as the company winds up its operations.”

Full statement shared on social media by PDI associate publisher Juliet Labog-Javellana.
