In recognition of their grassroots social and community development initiatives, Prime Infra-led subsidiaries Ahunan Power Inc. and Olympia Violago Water and Power Inc. (OVWPI) were honored with two Bantayog ng Lawa Awards by the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) on Oct. 10.

The Bantayog ng Lawa Awards celebrate organizations and individuals that have made significant contributions to sustainable development and livelihood within the Laguna de Bay region.

Both Ahunan and OVWPI received the Bantayog Para sa Kabuhayan category award for programs that promote access to healthcare, livelihood, and employment opportunities in local communities, Prime Infra said in a press release.

“The Bantayog ng Lawa Award recognizes the efforts of Ahunan Power and Olympia Violago in implementing key government projects in renewable energy and water supply,” said Engr. Emiterio C. Hernández, EnP, LLDA environmental regulations department manager III. “These initiatives will drive more sustainable development and economic prosperity in our region.”

Empowering local communities

Ahunan Power launched its flagship community development program, Tayo na Pakil, in 2022 following a comprehensive needs assessment among local residents. The initiative identified limited healthcare access and livelihood opportunities as key issues.

Through PAKILight, the program trained 70 women in candle and paper bag production, forming the Tanglaw Women of Pakil, a micro-enterprise that empowers women entrepreneurs and provides sustainable income.

Another component, PAKILigtas, promotes disaster preparedness through training and education on climate change and emergency response, equipping participants with Go Bags containing essential supplies for resilience.

Building skills and opportunity

Meanwhile, OVWPI’s Kilos Calawis program, established in 2024, focuses on skills-based development for both indigenous and non-indigenous peoples within its project area.

A joint undertaking with Prime Infra Foundation, the program offers training in emergency response, environmental stewardship, hygiene and sanitation, community geohazard mapping, nutrition, and culture preservation.

By developing skills rather than relying solely on resource-based programs, OVWPI enables residents to pursue economic opportunities beyond their communities—fostering long-term, inclusive growth.

Commitment to sustainability

The Bantayog Para sa Kabuhayan Awards are particularly meaningful for Ahunan and OVWPI, whose large-scale projects required strict compliance with environmental regulations and close collaboration with local stakeholders.

These recognitions affirm Prime Infra’s commitment to integrating environmental stewardship and social responsibility across its operations—creating lasting positive impact not only in the Laguna de Bay region but in all communities where it operates. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
