GCash, the country’s largest mobile payments service, said on Thursday that its popular electronic wallet is fully operational and that no disruptions have been experienced, nor are any clients’ funds missing.

This statement came amid social media reports that a data breach earlier this year may have resulted in personal data of an estimated 200,000 clients being compromised. According to the Facebook page of Deep Web Konek, the target of the hack was GCash’s know-your-customer (KYC) system which includes mobile numbers and ID images used for validating clients’ identities.

“There is no impact to users’ accounts,” GCash group head for new businesses and corporate communications Winsley Bangit said in an interview with InsiderPH. “The system is secure, and everything is accounted for. That’s the important thing.

GCash system remains secure and fully operational. No client funds are missing, and initial probe shows no evidence of customer information being compromised.

In particular, Bangit said GCash is coordinating close with its regulators, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the National Privacy Commission regarding this alleged incident.

Separately, GCash issued a statement saying it was aware of the alleged data breach of KYC data and, upon learning about this, promptly launched an investigation.

The company said it is closely working with our regulators and authorities.

“Based on our initial findings, there are no indications of a data breach in our systems and this has no impact on customer funds and their accounts remain safe and secure,” GCash said, adding that it shares the goal of regulators in “addressing the growing incidents of data leaks that have made headlines in the past weeks.”

“We remind our customers to protect their personal information and regularly update their passwords and MPIN,” the company said.

The report about the alleged GCash cybersecurity incident is the third one this week alleging a data breach at a major company. Over the weekend, Jollibee reported that client data was compromised in a hacking incident. Yesterday, a data breach was reported concerning e-commerce platform Lazada Philippines, but the company denied this.
