The Philippines saw a staggering 3,937,779 scam text messages and 414,446 scam calls from August 2023 to August 2024, according to data from the Whocall app of Gogolook, a technology partner of the government’s Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).

The report also highlighted the growing problem of spam communications, with over 42 million spam SMS and 6.6 million spam calls recorded during the same period.

According to the report released by CICC representatives, scam messages ranged from phishing attempts to fraudulent promotions, with 25 percent of scams luring victims to register on phishing sites and 18 percent offering fake gift cards or discounts.

Additionally, 17 percent promoted apps from unauthorized sources, while 15 percent involved job or loan scams. Tech gadget-related scams accounted for 14 percent, and 11 percent were education-related.

In the first eight months of 2024 alone, the app recorded more than three million scam messages and 320,978 scam calls, with spam volumes remaining high as well.

Whoscall, leveraging AI technology, protects users by identifying scam calls and blocking suspicious SMS links. It is owned by Taiwan-based Gogolook which works closely with international agencies, including the Philippines’ CICC, to combat these scams and ensure safer digital experiences for Filipinos.
