“These enhancements are part of our ongoing efforts to deliver secure and seamless digital banking services,” said Fitzgerald Chee, head of consumer platforms. “Security is foundational to the trust our clients place in us.”
What’s new
The update, rolled out at the end of July for iOS, Android, and Huawei users, introduces features aimed at detecting suspicious background activity, disabling potentially harmful overlays, and mitigating risks of app tampering.
Some of these enhancements may trigger alerts (such as "device security compromised") or temporarily restrict app access if a device is flagged as potentially unsafe.
Why it matters
With the rise in phishing, malware, and mobile-based cyberattacks, banks like BPI are investing heavily in client protection. The new security measures proactively shield user data and app usage—especially for Android users, who are more exposed to third-party app risks.
What clients need to do
BPI recommends users update their app to version 13.1 and follow these steps if they encounter restricted access or alerts:
1. Disable full-screen overlays or notifications
Some antivirus apps use overlay permissions that conflict with BPI’s security settings.
To disable: Go to Settings > Apps, select the antivirus app, then turn off overlay permissions.
2. Samsung users: Use secure folder
Step 1: Activate secure folder
Go to Settings > Biometrics and Security > Secure Folder
Sign in with your Samsung account and set your preferred lock
Step 2: Add BPI App to secure folder
Open Secure Folder > tap the + icon > Select BPI App > Tap Add
Step 3: Launch BPI App securely
Close all other apps
Open Secure Folder and tap BPI app to launch it safely
“We strongly encourage all users to keep their apps updated and follow these steps for uninterrupted, secure mobile banking,” BPI said in a customer advisory.
What’s next
BPI is expected to roll out more security and usability enhancements as it continues investing in its digital infrastructure. The bank recently crossed major milestones in onboarding millions of users into its upgraded mobile ecosystem, and these updates aim to ensure a safer digital banking experience for all. —Ed: Corrie S.
