Google blocks 3.2 million risky app installs in PH with new Enhanced Play Protect

Google has launched Enhanced Play Protect in the Philippines — a security feature aimed at preventing financial fraud and malicious app installations — which, the internet search giant said strengthens Android devices’ defense against harmful “side-loaded” applications.

In a press briefing in Taguig City, Google officials said the rise of financial scams in the Philippines, often linked to downloading apps from unofficial sources, prompted it to improve its real-time scanning capabilities.

In particular, many fraudulent apps disguise themselves as quick loan services or gaming apps, tricking users into installing software that steals personal information or funds.

To address this risk, Enhanced Play Protect leverages AI-driven detection to block potentially dangerous app installations. The feature has already demonstrated significant security improvements in markets such as India, Thailand, Singapore, and Brazil, and is now fully available in the Philippines.

As of Feb. 10, Enhanced Play Protect has already successfully blocked over 3.2 million high-risk install attempts in the Philippines, Google said.

Assuming a conservative amount of P1 lost to fraud per blocked app, Google Philippines head of government affairs and public policy Yves Gonzalez said during the briefing that blocking these installations may have already prevented financial losses amounting to at least P3.2 million during this short period.

Government lauds Google’s security efforts

Regulators and industry leaders have welcomed Google’s initiative, emphasizing its role in protecting Filipinos from cyber threats.

“Online safety is crucial in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. Google is reinforcing its commitment to user security with the launch of Enhanced Play Protect in the Philippines,” said Emilio Benito Aquino, chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“This innovation automatically blocks the installation of potentially harmful apps from unofficial sources. We applaud Google’s efforts to protect Filipinos online. By working together, we can build a stronger foundation for internet safety in the country,” he added .
