DHL opens bigger Cebu facility to meet growing VisMin demand

DHL Express has relocated its Cebu Gateway to a new, larger facility at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, boosting capacity and operational efficiency to serve the growing shipment demand from the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

Why it matters:

The upgrade comes as Eastern Visayas posted a 45.5-percent surge in exports in January 2025 versus the same period last year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. DHL says the move reinforces its commitment to providing high-quality express service while preparing for sustained trade growth.

"Our new Cebu Gateway facility is a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing the best service to our customers, especially in the VisMin region," said Nigel Lockett, country manager of DHL Express Philippines. "This investment expands our reach to support businesses and their operations, thereby contributing to the country’s economic growth."

Bigger, faster, greener

  • The new 3,875-square-meter facility improves sorting activities and streamlines shipment handling in line with global standards.

  • It has an inbound sort capacity of 825 pieces/hour and outbound capacity of 320 pieces/hour for both import and export operations.

  • Features include 100 percent direct loading positions and advanced security technology integrating shipment imaging with checkpoint scanning for comprehensive screening.

In keeping with DHL’s low-carbon goals, the building uses energy-efficient LED lighting, inverter air-conditioning, high-volume low-speed fans, and maximized natural ventilation and skylights to reduce energy use.

Strategic location advantage

Thilaga Vathy Rajoo, VP for operations at DHL Express Philippines, said the gateway’s location provides direct access to both airside and landside areas, enabling faster transport from aircraft to facility.

"This will enhance our sorting processes and is expected to result in earlier courier departure times for deliveries and potentially later pickup times," Rajoo noted.

With daily inbound and outbound DHL flights serving Cebu, the facility can handle larger shipment volumes while maintaining same-day flight schedules and fast transit commitments — giving DHL a competitive edge in the region.

Positioning for trade growth

According to the DHL Trade Atlas 2025, the Philippines is forecast to rank among the top 30 countries worldwide for both speed and scale of trade growth from 2024 to 2029.

By expanding in Cebu, DHL is strengthening the country’s trade infrastructure and positioning it to capitalize on this growth. The investment, DHL says, highlights the Philippines’ potential as a rising player in global markets.
