Smart Communications warned the public to be wary fraudulent messages sent through devices mimicking cell towers. These devices can target mobile phones within a specific radius, bypassing Smart’s network to deliver scam messages directly.
“While cell site simulators are typically used in disaster-stricken areas as temporary emergency communication platforms, Smart says there is a need for government oversight on the legitimate use of these devices,” the telco giant said in a statement.
Smart is working with the government, the National Telecommunications Commission, and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center to regulate these devices and combat scam messages.
Recently, Smart blocked a phishing domain after subscribers reported receiving fake messages about expiring rewards points.
