In a statement released over the weekend, Smart said the project is capable of blocking up to 30 million malicious texts daily, leading to fewer SMShing reports.
From January to July, Smart prevented over a billion SMShing messages and blocked 770 thousand fraudulent mobile numbers.
“Smart continues to upgrade its cyber defenses to further protect customers from text scams. The new firewall blocks malicious text messages from being sent using the network,” said Jojo Gendrano, senior vice president and chief information security officer at PLDT and Smart.
The telco giant said security upgrade also cover the full cycle of blocking SMShing messages, from both the sending and receiving ends.
In June, their system also blocked over 20 billion attempts to access malicious websites. Smart is collaborating with government agencies to combat cybercrime, while urging customers to stay vigilant against SMShing scams.
