Smart Communications steps up cybercrime fight

PLDT Inc.’s Smart Communications is stepping up efforts to combat cybercrimes amid the proliferation of smartphone-aided scams, blocking over 13 million scam messages during the first quarter of 2024 alone.

"We remain steadfast in our commitment to work with the government and other industry stakeholders in intensifying efforts to help safeguard our customers against mobile phone-aided fraudulent activities,” said Roy Ibay, head of regulatory at Smart.

The company is also seeking the government’s help in cracking down on the use of cell site simulators, which scammers employ to deceive unsuspecting subscribers with fraudulent messages.

Smart said it was calling on government authorities to “exercise oversight” on the use of these devices.

Earlier, the telco giant joined forces with industry players and the National Privacy Commission to ensure customer data protection, especially against digital fraud and other cybercrimes.

It also partnered with the National Telecommunications Commission and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center to aid in the investigation and prosecution of scammers.
