The company now targets fake IDs and photos in the registration system. Since December 2023, Smart has implemented live selfies and liveness checks to verify users, disabling stock photo uploads. Registrations are verified before activation, ensuring tighter control.
“Smart assures our customers that we are continuously enhancing our network infrastructure to reject fraudulent SIM registration as we intensify our efforts against mobile technology-aided criminal activities,” Roy Ibay, vice president and head of regulatory affairs at Smart, said in a statement.
The National Bureau of Investigation also lauded Smart’s security upgrades after its system blocked fake ID registrations during tests.
Smart previously introduced a network firewall that blocks malicious links in text messages. In August, it prevented nearly 200 million SMShing messages and blocked over 770,000 mobile numbers tied to illegal activities this year.
