This move highlights the growing role of the private sector in sustainable automotive lifecycle management, reinforcing the Philippines’ participation in Toyota’s global push for responsible vehicle disposal and recycling.
Zoom in:
Standard Insurance’s ELV facility is located at its technical and training center in Naic, Cavite, covering 8,840 square meters. It dismantles an average of 850 vehicles annually — mostly insured units — and handles up to six units per day.
The project is backed by a ₱17.8-million investment, underscoring the insurer’s commitment to circular economy principles.
Between the lines:
ELV dismantling is key to reducing environmental risks posed by end-of-life cars, safely managing hazardous materials like oils, batteries, and airbags, while enabling material recovery for future manufacturing use.
With two dismantlers now active — the first being En Tsumugi ELV Dismantler Corp. in Mexico, Pampanga — TMP is beefing up the local framework for responsible vehicle decommissioning.
What they’re saying:
“We are very grateful to Standard Insurance for its voluntary resolve, making Toyota customers also feel assured with a proper place for ELVs to go,” said TMP president Masando Hashimoto.
“Our efforts reflect Toyota’s long-term commitment to carbon neutrality and a recycling-based society, aligned with the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050,” he added.
Big picture:
The Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project aims to set up ELV dismantlers in key regions worldwide. Standard Insurance is the fifth model site in Southeast Asia, advancing both Toyota’s environmental strategy and the Philippines’ circular economy agenda. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
