Globe Telecom said Filipinos are consuming more mobile data as internet connectivity increasingly becomes an essential service for work, education, business, financial transactions and entertainment.

Average monthly mobile data usage among Globe subscribers rose to about 17 gigabytes (GB) in the first half of 2026 from 15 GB a year earlier, reflecting growing demand for video streaming, social media, gaming, e-commerce, digital payments, productivity tools and artificial intelligence-powered applications.

More than 39.6 million Globe subscribers are now active mobile data users, underscoring the growing role of internet access in Filipinos’ daily activities.

Fifth utility

Globe said changing consumer behavior is reinforcing the view of connectivity as the “fifth utility,” alongside essential services such as water, electricity, gas and transportation.

The shift toward data was also reflected in the telecommunications company’s revenue mix.

Data-driven revenues accounted for 91 percent of Globe’s consolidated gross service revenues in the first six months of the year, as customers increasingly rely on internet connectivity to communicate, transact, access information and use digital services.

“The way Filipinos use connectivity tells us we are progressively becoming a digital nation,” Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz said.

Cruz said the company would continue improving its network and customer experience as more Filipinos incorporate digital services into their everyday lives.

Network investments

Globe invested P26.3 billion in capital expenditures during the first half to expand and improve its digital infrastructure as data consumption continued to climb.

The company said investments in network capacity, stability and service quality are becoming increasingly important as connectivity takes on a bigger role in the economy.

Globe expects demand for reliable internet access to continue growing as more activities shift online and emerging technologies such as AI become more widely adopted.

The telco said it remains committed to developing resilient networks capable of supporting the country’s expanding digital economy and the evolving connectivity requirements of Filipino consumers and businesses. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
