Generation Z and millennials accounted for more than 87 percent of Metrobank eSavings accounts opened since the start of the year, according to the bank.
“Saving doesn't always begin with a large amount. More often, it starts with having the right tools that make the habit simple and accessible,” the lender said in a statement.
Nearly half of new account holders came from Metro Manila and Region IV, while most were women, reflecting strong adoption among digitally connected, working-age Filipinos.
Building relationships early
Metrobank said customers are increasingly opening and managing savings accounts through its mobile app rather than visiting branches, making digital banking the entry point for many first-time savers.
The bank has expanded its digital platform beyond savings accounts to include online time deposits and access to unit investment trust funds, allowing customers to keep more of their banking and investment activities within its ecosystem.
“Recognizing this evolving customer journey, Metrobank continues to expand the capabilities of its online banking platforms beyond basic transactions. Through the Metrobank App and Metrobank Online, customers can conveniently access a wider range of financial solutions designed to help their money work harder,” the bank said.
Competing for digital customers
The push comes as established banks continue investing in mobile banking services to defend market share against fast-growing digital banks and fintech players competing for deposits and everyday transactions.
To attract more users, Metrobank is offering a P100 Lazada gift card to eligible customers who open an eSavings account through the Metrobank App and register for the promotion by Sept. 30.
