Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. opened its first branch in Binondo in 1962, beginning a 64-year journey that would turn a neighborhood bank into one of the Philippines’ biggest financial institutions.

Founded by the late George S.K. Ty, the bank grew alongside generations of Filipino families and businesses, weathering economic crises and adapting as the ways people save, borrow, invest and transfer money changed.

Metrobank, chaired by Arthur Ty, reported P3.9 trillion in consolidated assets and P24.9 billion in net income in the first half of 2026.

Lessons from uncertainty

“Over the past 64 years, we have seen our customers navigate many periods of change and uncertainty. Today is no different,” president Fabian Dee said.

“There are challenges ahead that we have to be prepared for, but Metrobank enters this environment with discipline, well-supported by our capital, liquidity, and risk buffers to help us navigate uncertainty and continue supporting our customers,” he added.

A stronger balance sheet

Metrobank said its capital, liquidity and asset quality provide protection against potential risks while allowing it to continue lending and investing during periods of economic uncertainty.

The Asian Banker has named Metrobank the Philippines’ strongest bank for five consecutive years since 2021. The publication also recognized it as the Best Managed Bank for 2025.

The shift to digital banking

Metrobank has expanded beyond its traditional branch network as more Filipinos conduct financial transactions online.

Customers can open an eSavings account and access Online Time Deposit products, unit investment trust funds and government securities through its digital channels.

The bank also produces financial education material through its Earnest financial mindfulness program and Moneygurado docuseries. The initiatives cover saving, investing, debt management and financial security.

For corporate clients, Metrobank offers financing, cash management, investment services and market research.

Work beyond banking

Metrobank also carries out education, health, livelihood, arts and community-development programs through the Metrobank Foundation.

The foundation’s Outstanding Filipinos program recognizes teachers, police officers and soldiers for their work in public service. The Metrobank Foundation and GT Foundation provide grants to organizations working on education, health, livelihood and community-development projects through the George S.K. Ty Grants Program.

The Metrobank Art & Design Excellence program, meanwhile, recognizes emerging Filipino artists and designers.

The next chapter

“Our financial strength allows us to continue lending, investing in our capabilities and supporting our customers through different market conditions,” Dee said.

“Ultimately, we believe a bank becomes stronger when the people and businesses it serves become stronger, too,” he added.
