The partnership supports Maynilad’s continuing efforts to optimize energy use and accelerate its transition to cleaner sources.
Poblacion WTP joins RES program
Under the deal, Poblacion WTP—Maynilad’s newest facility—was enrolled in the Retail Electricity Supply (RES) program, where MPower will provide a power mix consisting of 90 percent non-renewable and 10 percent renewable energy.
MPower will also work with Maynilad to better manage the plant’s energy consumption in preparation for a future increase in renewable share.
Aggregated supply for 54 facilities
Beyond Poblacion WTP, 54 Maynilad facilities, including pump stations, reservoirs, and wastewater treatment plants, have been enrolled in MPower’s Retail Aggregation Program (RAP). The initiative consolidates multiple electricity accounts for bulk purchasing, improving operational efficiency and reducing costs.
“These initiatives form part of our broader strategy to optimize energy consumption while reducing our overall environmental footprint,” said Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.
Toward carbon neutrality by 2037
Maynilad is targeting carbon neutrality by 2037 through a comprehensive sustainability roadmap. This includes a higher reliance on renewable energy and the development of a carbon sink equivalent to 180,000 metric tons of CO₂.
As of March 2025, the company plans to increase its renewable energy use to 15 percent of total requirements, with a target range of 35 percent to 50 percent by 2037.
These efforts align with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which commits the Philippines to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent by 2030. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
