DOTr backs non-car modes of transport as MMDA eyes removal of bike lanes on EDSA

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is advancing its commitment to sustainable transportation, promoting non-motorized transport (NMT) such as cycling and walking, alongside light electric vehicles (LEVs).

The statement was made as the Metro Manila Development Authority proposed the removal of bike lanes on EDSA to ease road congestion.

The DOTr said the initiative supporting non-motorised transport was aligned with the National Transport Policy (NTP) and the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028. This aims to alleviate traffic congestion by creating safer, dedicated infrastructure like bike lanes and walkways.

“The program is expected to gain momentum after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that the national government should prioritize active transport facilities to promote healthier and more sustainable modes of travel,” the DOTr said.
