Confirmed: Lufthansa Technik Philippines to end line maintenance unit

Insider Spotlight

  • Lufthansa Technik Philippines will stop line maintenance services starting Aug. 1, 2026
  • The company will focus on base maintenance and aircraft overhaul operations
  • Philippine Airlines will fully internalize line maintenance for its fleet
  • PAL will remain a base maintenance customer of Lufthansa Technik Philippines

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) — the joint venture between the German aviation giant and Lucio Tan’s MacroAsia Corp. — will discontinue its line maintenance services effective Aug. 1, 2026, as the aircraft maintenance provider shifts its focus toward base maintenance and overhaul operations.

In a statement released by the firm's publicist on Thursday, May 14, 2026, the company said the move is part of a strategic realignment of its business portfolio in the Philippines, where it has long served as a maintenance partner for Philippine Airlines (PAL).

Under the new setup, LTP will concentrate on base maintenance services and aircraft overhaul activities at its Manila facility.

Why it matters

The decision reflects a broader trend in the airline industry, where carriers are increasingly bringing maintenance functions in-house to gain tighter operational control and improve efficiency.

PAL, LTP’s long-time customer and partner for more than 25 years, has decided to expand its internal maintenance capabilities by taking over all line maintenance activities for its fleet through its existing maintenance organization.

Line maintenance refers to routine aircraft servicing and inspections conducted between flights or during short turnaround periods.

LTP did not reveal how many jobs will be affected by the closure of its line maintenance operations — which industry sources estimated will number "in the hundreds" — nor did it reveal how many workers, if any, will be absorbed by PAL under the arrangement.

The big picture

Despite the discontinuation of line maintenance services, the partnership between PAL and LTP will continue through base maintenance operations in Manila.

“As a long-time partner, Philippine Airlines has made the strategic decision to further strengthen and expand its in-house maintenance capability by performing its entire line maintenance internally and servicing its full fleet through its existing maintenance organization,” the company said.

“By bringing line maintenance in-house, Philippine Airlines is following a broader industry trend among airlines,” it added.

LTP also confirmed that PAL “will remain a customer for base maintenance services in Manila.”

The maintenance provider is one of the country’s major aerospace and aviation engineering companies, specializing in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services for both local and international carriers.
