Teleperformance PH surpasses 60% renewable energy use, boosts sustainability commitment

Teleperformance (TP) in the Philippines, a customer experience management and business process outsourcing services provider, has reinforced its dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by surpassing a major milestone: Over 60 percent of its nationwide energy consumption now comes from renewable sources.

This achievement further cements TP’s position as a pioneer in corporate sustainability, actively shaping a greener future for the country and beyond, the company said in a statement.

A catalyst for positive change

As of September 2024, TP in the Philippines has saved 35.8 million kilowatt-hours of energy, a reduction equivalent to:

  •  The emissions from 5,598 gasoline-powered vehicles driven for a year
  •  The carbon absorption capacity of 396,806 tree seedlings grown over a decade
  •  The annual carbon budget of 18,460 people

"Shifting to renewable energy is a major step toward our goal of reducing our environmental impact and building a sustainable future," said Rahul Jolly, chief executive officer of TP in the Philippines.

"We’re committed to expanding our renewable energy initiatives, and we believe that by working together, we can create a healthier planet for generations to come," Jolly added.

Aligning with global climate goals

Teleperformance’s global sustainability efforts are aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ensuring the company contributes to keeping global warming within the critical 1.5°C limit.

TP is among the first 100 companies to join the Climate Pledge, committing to carbon neutrality by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement targets.

Driving global and local impact

One of TP’s major environmental partnerships is with One Tree Planted, a nonprofit organization focused on reforestation. Through this initiative, TP has contributed over $500,000, directly funding tree-planting projects worldwide.

In the Philippines, this partnership has helped restore 400 hectares of land in Aurora Province, providing a secure habitat for the endangered Philippine Eagle while supporting local communities.

Moreover, TP’s Sucat site became the company’s first clean energy-powered facility, setting the standard for the company’s nationwide transition to renewable energy. A 2023 employee commuting survey also highlighted TP’s commitment to reducing overall carbon emissions.

Accelerating climate action across 27 sites

Throughout 2024, TP implemented multiple sustainability initiatives across its 27 sites in the Philippines, with significant carbon footprint reductions:

  • Sucat: Reduced 2,033 metric tons of CO₂
  • Bacolod: Reduced 2,729 metric tons of CO₂
  • Davao & Cebu: Conducted beach cleanups, relief operations, and school repair volunteer programs

TP also achieved a 1,495 metric ton CO₂ reduction through its Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Upgrade Activity, contributing to its ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management and ISO 45001 certification for Occupational Health and Safety from Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS).

As part of its commitment to Net Zero by 2040, TP actively participates in Earth Hour, saving 27,123 kWh of electricity in a single year, which translates to a 19.2 metric ton reduction in CO₂ emissions.

Commitment to sustainability

"Our commitment has always been to be a Force for Good for people, communities, and the environment," said Jeffrey Johnson, chief people officer and president of TP’s Citizen of the World (COTW) Foundation. "We believe that integrating sustainability into our business operations is not just the right thing to do—it also drives long-term value."

Looking ahead, TP remains dedicated to expanding its renewable energy use, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering partnerships with environmental groups and government agencies to amplify positive environmental impact across the Philippines. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
