Tech meets agri: PLDT, Smart help Davao’s cacao farmers go digital

Davao’s thriving cacao industry is getting a digital transformation, thanks to the joint effort of PLDT, Smart, the Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Training Institute (DA-ATI), and Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA).

A year into this collaboration, more cacao farmers in Mindanao are leveraging mobile technology to enhance their farms and livelihoods.

Bringing digital farming to Davao

Since 2019, the PLDT, Smart, and DA-ATI Digital Farmers Program has been bridging the gap between traditional agriculture and modern technology. Through this initiative, farmers have learned to use mobile apps for crop monitoring, financial management, and online selling.

The impact is especially significant in Davao, which produces 80 percent of the country’s cacao. By integrating digital solutions, farmers can improve productivity and reach more buyers.

“We’re committed to making sure Davao’s cacao farmers succeed in an era where everything is online,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, PLDT’s and Smart’s head of stakeholder management. “By equipping them with the right tools and knowledge, we’re not just helping them grow their businesses—we’re strengthening the entire agricultural sector.”

Since 2024, over 300 cacao farmers in rural communities have received training on:

  •  Tracking weather conditions for better planting decisions
  •  Managing farm finances with mobile tools
  •  Selling cacao directly to buyers through digital platforms

MEDA has also provided guidance on sustainable farming techniques, ensuring that cacao farming remains environmentally friendly and resource-efficient.

For farmers like Lizabeth Gabonada of the MIEDECO cooperative, these skills are life-changing. “These apps help us monitor the weather properly. Now, we can decide the best time to plant and identify the best areas for growing cacao. That makes a huge difference.”

A model for digital agriculture in the Philippines

The Digital Farmers Program proves that technology-driven farming can transform Philippine agriculture. Recognized by local and international organizations, this initiative highlights the power of digital inclusion in improving livelihoods and ensuring food security.

Beyond cacao, PLDT and Smart continue to support digital transformation in farming, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  •  Goal 1 – No poverty
  •  Goal 8 – Decent work and economic growth
