Yokohama Tire Philippines taps Isla LPG Corp. in major sustainability push

In a bid to advance their sustainability goals and reduce environmental impact, Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc. (YTPI) has formed a strategic partnership with Isla LPG Corp., a key player in the country’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) industry.

The collaboration is aimed at transitioning the tire manufacturing firm’s fuel system from diesel-powered boilers to cleaner, more efficient LPG technology.

The partnership represents a pivotal move for both companies as they explore innovative energy solutions to optimize operations and minimize carbon emissions.

“This marks a significant milestone on sustainability and efficiency,” said Atsushi Funayama, president and CEO of YTPI. “This is a crucial step for our company to shift from diesel-powered boilers to LPG.”

The partnership aligns with YTPI’s long-term commitment to responsible manufacturing and environmental stewardship.

For Isla LPG, the partnership is a testament to growing demand for LPG in industrial applications. “Many years ago, we realized the potential of LPG as a cleaner alternative fuel,” said Jose Antonio Gonzalez, chief commercial officer of Isla LPG. “With improved economics, more clients are now choosing LPG for their manufacturing facilities.”

YTPI’s sustainability strategy includes reducing energy consumption, cutting carbon dioxide emissions, and engaging in waste reduction and recycling programs. This partnership is a direct response to the company’s drive to modernize its production practices while maintaining maximum output efficiency.

The conversion to LPG will result in significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring a consistent energy supply to support YTPI’s high-volume manufacturing. Isla LPG’s established supply chain and distribution network ensures minimal operational disruptions, enhancing reliability across YTPI’s operations.

“We aim to strengthen and expand this partnership under the philosophy of Sanpo Yoshi—good for the seller, good for the buyer, and good for society."

Tomoaki Asai, CEO of Isla Petroleum and Gas Corp., expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of the collaboration. “We aim to strengthen and expand this partnership under the philosophy of Sanpo Yoshi—good for the seller, good for the buyer, and good for society,” Asai said, referring to the age-old Japanese business principle now adopted by Itochu, Isla LPG’s parent company.

Beyond supplying fuel, Isla LPG will provide infrastructure, technical support, and integration services to ensure a seamless transition to LPG for YTPI.

“YTPI has indeed found the right partner in Isla LPG Corp.,” said Jose Antonio “Banjo” Castillo, COO of Isla Petroleum and Gas Corp. “We aim to help our partners boost production volumes without increasing environmental impact.” —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
