The agreement, finalized on Dec. 12, secures the supply of 800 kilowatts (kW) of electricity sourced from the Palinpinon geothermal power plant in Valencia, Negros Oriental, operated by First Gen subsidiary Energy Development Corp. (EDC), First Gen said in a statement.
“Our partnership with First Gen has yielded substantial reduction in our electricity consumption and realized cost savings. More importantly, we are privileged to be utilizing clean power sourced from Negros which has also helped reduce our carbon footprint,” said Fredita R. Tan, president/administrator of SUMC Foundation.
SUMC’s collaboration with First Gen began in 2022 with a direct RE supply agreement and the installation of a rooftop-mounted solar facility generating up to 462 kilowatt-peak (KWp). The partnership also includes Pi Energy's Remote Energy Monitoring System and Energy Audit services to optimize electricity usage.
As the first tertiary medical center in Negros Island to source RE through the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), SUMC exemplifies how healthcare institutions can adopt sustainable practices.
“Hospitals and the broader healthcare sector are energy-intensive and leave a significant carbon footprint,” said Carlos Lorenzo Vega, First Gen VP for marketing, trading and economics.
The collaboration between First Gen and SUMC ensures stable, secure energy at optimized costs while supporting decarbonization, Vega added.
First Gen, through EDC, generates over 60 percent of the Philippines’ geothermal energy and operates a portfolio of 1,651 MW from RE sources. --Ed: CSN
