SM Prime Holdings Inc. is bringing back Harrison Plaza, redeveloping the country’s first one-stop shopping mall nearly five decades after it opened in 1976.

The company is investing over P6 billion to rebuild the Manila site, with the new mall set to open in 2027.

The project will transform the aging complex into a modern retail and lifestyle hub in Malate.

Major redevelopment

The redevelopment is part of SM Prime’s P150-billion program for 2026 to 2030, covering upgrades of 16 malls and 12 to 15 new developments.

Once completed, SM Harrison Plaza will span more than 200,000 square meters, putting it on par with major malls like SM City Davao and SM City Clark.

Urban play

“The development will incorporate nature-inspired architectural elements alongside open layouts, community spaces and green areas designed to support cultural and social activities,” said Steven T. Tan, president of SM Supermalls.

The project will strengthen SM Prime’s presence in Manila’s cultural and entertainment district, serving workers, residents, and students across Malate and Ermita.

Its location near key landmarks like Manila Bay, CCP Complex, and major hotels is expected to attract both local and foreign tourists.

The mall will mix global and local brands while creating jobs and supporting broader urban renewal in the city, according to SM Prime.
