SM-backed Watsons opens 60% of 2024 outlets outside Metro Manila

The SM Group’s Watsons Philippines expanded by 7 percent in 2024 to 1,166 stores, with over 60 percent (50 stores) of the 80 new openings strategically located in high-growth provinces outside Metro Manila.

Since its debut in 2002, Watsons Philippines has rapidly expanded under a joint venture between the SM Group and Hong Kong-based A.S. Watson & Co. Ltd.

The brand’s growing nationwide footprint ensures better access to healthcare and beauty products for Filipino consumers, reinforcing its commitment to serving diverse communities.

The “Asia-Pacific Front Line of Healthcare 2024” study by Bain & Co. highlights that 85 percent of regional consumers prioritize healthcare maintenance. Additionally, 51 percent are willing to increase out-of-pocket spending to achieve better health outcomes and experiences, reflecting a growing focus on personal well-being.

Focus on community pharmacies

Watsons started its community pharmacy journey in 2015 with its first store in Pateros. Today, it operates in three key formats: Watsons Pharmacy, with over 1,000 locations nationwide; SM Beauty, available in 76 SM Stores; and LOOK, a multi-brand outlet located at SM Aura and SM Mall of Asia.

“Watsons is not only expanding in malls but is also committed to establishing a strong presence in local neighborhoods,” said Jared de Guzman, customer director at Watsons.

“By the end of 2024, we had 400 community stores throughout the Philippines, ensuring accessibility and convenience for our customers,” he said.
