In a statement, Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) chair and CEO Manuel Pangilinan explained that the 25-year franchise extension—recently enacted into law—is as a key enabler of the firm’s ongoing modernization and expansion plans as the power utility responds to the evolving needs of consumers and the broader economy
“We welcome the renewal of Meralco’s franchise—a recognition of our role in helping power the nation’s growth,” he said.
He added that the new franchise would support investments in infrastructure that improve electricity delivery across households, businesses, and industries, while also helping to make the distribution network more resilient to climate-related disruptions.
“This development fortifies our commitment to deliver stable, reliable, and affordable electricity to millions of Filipinos across our franchise area,” said Pangilinan, who also heads the Metro Pacific conglomerate and PLDT, the country’s largest telecommunications firm.
He also noted that the renewed franchise allows Meralco to introduce innovations that will improve operational efficiency and customer experience. The utility is also targeting energy independence as part of its long-term strategy.
Pangilinan expressed gratitude to President Marcos, as well as members of the Senate and House of Representatives, for approving the franchise renewal, which he described as a shared effort to ensure continued service improvements.
“With the continued trust of our leaders and stakeholders, we remain committed to transparency, regulatory compliance, and corporate social responsibility,” he said.
Meralco operates the largest power distribution network in the Philippines, serving over 7 million customers in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces. The renewed franchise will remain in effect until 2050.
