The telco is the first in the country to adopt the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), a regulatory initiative by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) that allows businesses to aggregate their facilities and source electricity from licensed renewable energy suppliers like ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES).
Pioneering the next phase of net zero commitment
Globe has long led the telecommunications industry in sustainability. In 2019, it became the first local telco to participate in both the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) and Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA).
Now, through RAP, Globe will shift a significantly broader set of facilities to renewable sources, going beyond its 33 high-energy use sites, 22 of which already operate under power purchase agreements with ACEN RES.
“We are grateful to the DOE for leading the renewable energy transition and to the ERC for enabling us to transition our smaller sites,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s chief sustainability and corporate communications officer.
“By expanding our sourcing of renewable energy to thousands of additional sites, we are taking deliberate steps toward our net zero goals and proving that clean energy is not only viable but necessary across all operational levels.”
Impact in numbers: Emissions and energy savings
Once completed, the switch will avoid an estimated 5.5 million kilograms of CO₂e greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per year and source around 80 million kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity annually.
These figures significantly bolster Globe’s decarbonization roadmap under the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company has committed to:
A 42-percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions
A 25-percent reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030, using a 2021 baseline
A long-term goal of a 90-percent reduction in total emissions (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) by 2050
Ayala Group synergy driving climate action
ACEN RES, a part of the Ayala Group, plays a vital role in powering Globe’s sustainability targets.
“This collaboration with Globe reflects the strength of synergies across the Ayala group in driving meaningful climate action,” said Irene Maranan, SVP and Head for Communications & Sustainability at ACEN.
“By enabling the shift of over 3,000 sites to renewable energy, we are not only accelerating Globe’s Scope 2 emissions reduction, but also advancing our collective net zero ambition as a group.”
The partnership also aligns with the Department of Energy’s target of achieving a 35-percent share of renewables in the energy mix by 2030, and 50 percent by 2040.
Recognized globally for network sustainability
Globe’s efforts were recently highlighted in GSMA’s “Mobile Net Zero: State of the Industry on Climate Action 2025” report. The publication cited Globe’s progress in powering both on-grid and off-grid sites with renewable energy sources.
With this initiative, Globe reinforces its role as the country’s most sustainability-driven digital network, making clean energy a core operational standard for the future. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
