The Department of Energy has granted Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp. (AWHC), the wind energy unit of Alternergy, a Certificate of Authority (COA) to explore and assess wind resources across 6,318 hectares in the province.
If viable, the project could deliver at least 150 megawatts in capacity, making it a key piece of Alternergy’s next pipeline beyond its current “Road to 500 megawatts by 2026” target.
Management’s view
“Alternergy is pleased to receive the DOE’s approval to develop another wind project in Luzon,” Knud Hedeager, president of AWHC, said in a statement.
“The COA framework is a landmark policy initiative by the current DOE under Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla. It supports developers from the onset, thereby helping mitigate project risks and enhance overall project viability,” he added.
Growing wind portfolio
This marks the company’s fifth wind venture in the Philippines, following active developments in Tanay, Rizal and Alabat, Quezon.
The approval comes months after Alternergy’s participation in the Albay Renewable Energy and Investment Summit in Sept. 2024.
Under the certificate, Alternergy has three years to complete pre-feasibility studies, which, if successful, could lead to a 25-year Wind Energy Service Contract.
