Globe is building the first off-grid solar-powered cell site on Taganak Island in the Turtle Islands, Tawi-Tawi, to improve digital access in this remote wildlife sanctuary.

The facility aims to connect 10,000 residents, enhance eco-tourism, and support environmental conservation and local economic growth. Scheduled for completion by mid-2025, it will use solar energy, an advanced antenna system, and AI-driven energy management to operate sustainably.

The project will eliminate diesel dependency, preventing about 40 metric tons of carbon emissions annually. Globe is also collaborating with local and national groups to ensure the initiative benefits eco-tourism, security, and conservation efforts.

Additional support includes waste management initiatives, reflecting Globe’s commitment to sustainability and digital inclusion.

Management’s view

“This project is a solid testament to Globe’s commitment to sustainable connectivity, made possible by a strong partnership with the government and local leaders to empower even our most remote communities,” said Gerhard Tan, senior director and head of technology strategy and innovations at Globe during the recent groundbreaking ceremony.

LGU provides land

“Connecting Turtle Islands to the digital world marks a new chapter for our community, bringing opportunities for growth, eco-tourism, and security through our partnership with Globe and our dedicated government partners,” said municipal Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul.

The local government allocated land on Taganak Island for the cell site, affirming its commitment to digital progress.
